There’s certainly no escaping the fact that the festive season is upon us, and for many Melbournians that means taking an after-dinner drive with the kids to check out the phenomenal Christmas light displays around the city.
Here are a few of the best places for Christmas light viewing in Melbourne.
Possibility the longest-running suburban festive display in Melbourne, residents of The Boulevard in Ivanhoe go all-out each Christmas, and locals flock there in droves to check out the spectacular decorations. The Boulevard has been the go-to Christmas lights spot in Melbourne since the fifties, and you’ll find everything from Santas and sleighs through to snowmen and traditional nativity scenes.
It’s become such a massive event that they now even have food, drinks and local music performances to cater to the crowds! This iconic street comes alive between 8.30 and 11pm each night, from December 15 through to Christmas Eve.
In Melbourne’s inner north, Preston is the place to be if you want to check out some dizzying Christmas light displays! In Gordon Grove, the owners at number 47 have more than 40,000 lights in operation and a stunning outdoor Christmas tree. Their lights are so popular that they’ve even started their own YouTube channel! You can see the impressive display right throughout December until Boxing Day, from 8.45 to 10.30pm.
A drive through Thomastown with the kids in December is sure to end in delight, with plenty of residents of this northern suburb embracing the spirit of the holidays.
In Wirraway Crescent you’ll find some gorgeous decorations and window displays at number 5, and they give out stickers and lolly bags for the children! Meanwhile, nearby on The Boulevard there is another impressive light show at number 118.
At Wilson Crescent in Hoppers Crossing, you’ll enter a genuine Christmas wonderland. The owners at number 1 have been putting up lights for almost 20 years, and they now have a projector playing Christmas movies and songs on the weekend. The owner has even sourced decorations from the US to keep the locals entertained! You can see the phenomenal display from 8.30 to 10.30pm each night.
On Coleman Ave, Kew East more than 62,000 lights adorn the property at number 19, with the hedges, trees and house itself painstakingly decorated. The event raises much-needed funds for the Starlight Foundation, so by visiting and dropping in a gold coin donation, you’ll be supporting a fantastic cause. There’s also a great display to check out around the corner on Woolcock Avenue.
Lebanon Crescent in Mulgrave is home to some impressive light displays, with the owners at number 11 taking Christmas spirit to a whole new level! More than 100,000 lights, a Polar Express choo-chooing along a track, and a snow machine make this home a must-see for the kids. They leave their decorations up until after New Year, from 8.30 til 11pm. While you’re there, check out number 41, who are also getting in on the action with an awesome display of their own.
Aloma Avenue, Wyndham Vale is a train-lovers paradise at Christmas, so be sure to take your little Thomas the Tank Engine fan to have a look this year!
They have a huge bubble-blowing Christmas Thomas train pulling a sleigh, as well as a miniature train, fish tank, Christmas-themed LEGO and movie projector, in their dreamy Santa’s workshop display.
